Gap solitons on an integrated CMOS chip

Abstract Nonlinear propagation in periodic media has been studied for decades, yielding demonstrations of numerous phenomena including strong temporal compression and slow light generation. Gap solitons, that propagate at frequencies inside the stopband, have observed optical fibres but elusive photonic chips. In this manuscript, we investigate nonlinear pulse a chip-based Bragg grating stopband observe clear, unequivocal signatures gap soliton propagation, light, intensity-dependent transmission, delay compression. Our experiments which are performed an on-chip ultra-silicon-rich nitride (USRN) with picosecond time scales, reveal group velocity reduction to 35%–40% speed vacuum, change 7 ps low peak powers between 15.7 W–36.6 W, is accompanied by up 2.7× input pulses. Theoretical calculations using coupled mode equations confirm observations delay. Of fundamental importance, demonstration opens platforms novel experimental studies solitons as basis all-optical buffers, lines storage.
